Our youngest artist, Vivian Otto, wrote this for us about herself and the photographs, which she took in 2014 when she was 11 years old.
Vivian was born in 2003. She lives in New York City with her Mom, Dad, and brother, who is in college. Vivian has always had pet mice and hamsters since kindergarten. In her free time she draws, plays video games like the Sims, takes photos and sometimes posts them on Instagram. She does not know what she wants to be when she grows up.
“The doll in these pictures was given to me by my grandma. I think she is kind of scary. The company name was Käthe Kruse. It is a German doll company. My grandma brought it with her to Australia from Germany. The name she gave the doll was Christel. She is about 80 years old. Her hair is made out of human hair, which makes it even scarier.
I was taking the photos as a story about a doll who had no friends at the beginning, but then she made some friends. I tried to make the pictures look old fashioned by using old teacups and other old props. I also used a fluffy fake realistic looking cat that sat on her lap in one of the photos. I think the photos are nice looking, but at the same time, something that would give me nightmares.”
